Termite Facts & Identification

Termites in Adelaide: Identification and Removal Tips

Termites are social insects that are commonly referred to as white ants. They belong to the order Isoptera and are known for their ability to consume and digest cellulose, the main component of wood and other plant fibres.

Termites live in large, organised colonies that can contain thousands of individuals. The colony comprises different castes, including workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. The workers are responsible for foraging for food and caring for the other colony members, while the soldiers defend the colony from predators and parasites. The reproductive individuals are responsible for producing new offspring to continue the colony’s growth.

Controlling termites can be challenging because of their ability to establish large and well-organised colonies and their tendency to hide their presence within the structure. At Tom’s Pest Control, we offer safe and effective removal of termites at affordable prices. In addition, since we have been in the pest control business for years, we can easily manage all types of termite infestation.

Types of Termites

The common types of termites that may enter your homes are:

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites are a type of termite commonly found in damp, decaying wood. As their name suggests, they prefer moist and decaying wood as a food source and are not commonly found in dry, sound wood. Dampwood termites are usually larger than other types and are often brown.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are commonly found in dry, sound wood, as their name suggests. Unlike other types of termites, they do not require a source of moisture and do not live in contact with the soil. These termites are typically smaller than other types and are usually light brown. They have long, narrow bodies and wings that are twice as long as their bodies.Drywood termites can establish their colonies in furniture, flooring, and other wooden structures within homes and buildings. They can cause significant damage to structures made of wood, as they consume and destroy the cellulose that makes up the structural support of the building.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are social insects known for causing significant damage to wooden structures such as houses and buildings. They belong to the family Rhinotermitidae and are known to build their nests in underground soil. Subterranean termites are tiny, measuring about 1/8 to 3/8 inch in length. They have soft bodies and are pale in colour, ranging from white to light brown.

Signs of Termite Infestation

Signs of a termite infestation include:

  • Swarming of winged insects
  • Mud tubes on foundation walls
  • Crawl spaces
  • Wood damage, such as hollow-sounding wood or sagging floorboards
  • Discarded wings around windowsills or near light fixtures
  • Piles of frass that resemble sawdust or coffee grounds
